This study updates a previous American Action Forum report on the nationwide impact of the opioid crisis on the labor market and economy. While a number of previous studies have estimated the economic costs associated with the opioid crisis, none has estimated the impact on workers and economic growth in each state. This study examines the impact of the opioid crisis on labor force participation and economic growth, both nationally and in each state. While the human toll of the opioid crisis is unquestionable, rising opioid dependency is also likely impacting the nation’s labor market and economy.
